Dating Slang

Maybe you have decided to get back into dating, and you have taken your search to Craigslist as a result. You’ve have started meeting up with people in bars and going to movies with people. The dating of today looks so much different from what it did one decade ago. How we find dates and even how we treat them is different. The dating landscape has shifted, but being aware of some of the dating slang that you might encounter could be helpful so that you don’t look clueless.

Aromantic

This basically could be defined as someone who doesn’t experience feelings like romantic love. It doesn’t come easily to these people, and some people will call it a curse while others will call it a blessing. It depends on who you find on Backpage. Probably one of the biggest hurdles that an aromantic person will face is feeling misunderstood or left out because of a culture where dating has not only become normal, and in fact, it has become an expectation.

Breadcrumbing

You may occasionally hear this term pop up in the dating world. Breadcrumbing could be considered when you have sent a flirty message that is non-committal to another individual. This happens when you’re not necessarily interested in them, but you don’t have the guts to break it off with them.

Casual Relations Hip

This could be considered where someone is somewhere in between being a sex buddy and going steady. It could be boiled down to being called the casual relationship. Two people will hang out and have sex together, but they won’t partake in anything that would show how they have a serious relationship together. There’s no commitment, and they won’t spend time with each other’s family or friends. You might find this date off Craigslist or somewhere else.

Catfishing

Catfishing could be called one of the dating terms that has even gained the attention of the mainstream media. This is thanks to the movie and TV show called Catfishing. You might call it catfishing when you message with someone who pretends they’re with another person. This means that you have been catfished. Generally, these setups tend to end badly, and if you catch someone catfishing you, you might be better off looking elsewhere.

Cuffing Season

You could refer to cuffing season as the time that happens from early fall to late winter. During this time period, it often feels like everyone has begun to shack up with the closest half-decent single person that they can find as a way of keeping the loneliness away during the cold and cool weather. Cuffing season is usually a mutually beneficial time that happens seasonally. The term came from the African American community, and it has been around at least since the beginning of 2010.

Curve

When you have been curved, it means that you were shot down or rejected. You may have been dismissed. Sure, it doesn’t feel good, but you have to learn how to absorb rejection without taking it personally.

Cushioning

Cushioning could be considered when you stay in contact with one or even a few extra romantic prospects while dating the main one. They’re known as the “cushions.” Cushions are usually kept as a backup dating source in case something doesn’t go well with your main crush. Usually, a cushion will be kept within the periphery. For example, you might text them instead of resorting to full-blown cheating.

Dogging

Mostly a British dating term, dogging happens when couples have sex in public. For example, they might have sex in a car in a place where other people could watch. According to legend, they might even join in, but the entire thing is a little bit sketchy. The thrill of voyeurism is a real thing, and it has excited some types of couples.

Emergency Call

You might have an emergency call as somewhat of a fake-out where you can politely back out of a poor dating situation. Let’s say you can already tell that the upcoming date will be a terrible trainwreck. What do you do without insulting your date? You might come up with an emergency fake call that says your brother has been taken to the emergency room. The earlier you do this, the better off you will be, however, because you don’t want them checking up on you later.

These are some of the possible internet dating terms that you could potentially run across. If you happen to hear them, now you will know what they mean. Another advantage of this is how you can now use them yourselves in a conversation with friends. You might, for example, talk about how you faked an emergency call to get out of a particularly bad date that you met on Backpage. Dating can be a lot of fun, and you can have some amazing memories, but understanding these terms can help to make it even more enjoyable.
